Getting in and out of Downtown Montréal is easy, with a multitude of public transport options available.
🚇 A multitude of métro stops serve the city centre, each offering a unique entry point into the hustle bustle, along with individualistic designs and unique public art which changes with every station.
🚍 Montréal’s bus system also offers several routes that traverse the neighbourhood, including some of the city’s most picturesque routes.
🚊 Trains arriving to Montréal terminate at Central Station, inaugurated in 1943 and featuring carved walls worth a second look.
🚲 The world-renowned BIXI bike-share system are a preferred local method of travel, offering both regular and e-bikes available to visitors.
🚘 Those driving in will also be happy to know there’s free parking on weekends, and also several clearly-marked parking garages available.

- Jardins Gamelin in The Village at downtown’s easternmost edge hosts concerts and public activities throughout the year, transforming into a snowboarding hill in the winter.
- The Esplanade Tranquille at the heart of the Quartier des Spectacles is both postcard-pretty skating rink and a vibrant performance space, with a charming café overlooking the square.
- The Esplanade Place Ville Marie looks up towards Montréal’s tallest skyscraper the Place Ville Marie, and it’s a perfect perch for watching Montréal’s business clan en route to and from the office.

Montréal is a mural city, and several stunners make for picture-perfect punctuation on any stroll through the downtown quartier. It’s also worth keeping your eyes upwards for the chance to see world-class artists at work high in the sky. And after dark, you might notice some of those multi-storey artworks in full motion as cutting-edge video projections take over some iconic downtown facades.
- One of the city’s most beloved poets and musicians Leonard Cohen looks benevolently down from an epic-sized mural portrait near Concordia University, lit up by spotlights throughout the night.
- The Grande Bibliothèque—Bibliothèque et Archives nationales du Québec is one of the city’s most modern icons, housing a huge collection of books and historical artefacts.
- The Wilder Building—Espace Danse is home to some of Montréal’s most highly-renowned dance companies, with in-house performances spaces.
- The wall outside of the Saint-Laurent métro station is lit up nightly via cutting-edge projection mapping technology, welcoming arrivals into the Downtown core.
- UQÀM campus’ Pavillon President-Kennedy is highly animated after dark, its curved façade glittering under projections.
Trend-setting urban art
Montréal specializes in public art pieces, ranging from epic-scale treats to hidden wonders, and Downtown is a particular hot-spot. Intriguing and photogenic, they’re the perfect way to spruce up your social media feed.
- The Ring is one of Montréal’s newest icons, erected over the Esplanade Place Ville Marie. Through its sightline, more than 200 years of local history shines from the neo-brutalist Fairmont The Queen Elizabeth hotel to McGill University, a blend of Georgian, Greek Revival and Gothic architecture.
- The giant 45 feet tall flowers of Les fleurs sont partout : Le jardin du centre-ville designed by LeBicar prompts passersby to keep their eyes open for blossoms anywhere and everywhere.
- The McCord Stewart Museum’s shady Museum Alley installation features works by different artists every year, ranging from street painting to sculpture and immersive installations.
Performance, performance, performance!
When it comes to performance, central Montréal is home to the city’s most celebrated and biggest stages both indoors and out. The Quartier des Spectacles is the city’s performing arts district, and also home to Montréal’s biggest summer, fall and winter festivals.
- Place des Festivals and Place des Arts host some of the Just For Laughs and Festival International de Jazz de Montréal headline performances, and transforms into the charming Great Christmas Market for the holiday season. The Place des Arts is also the year-round homebase for the Orchestre symphonique de Montréal (OSM), Les Grands Ballets and the Opéra de Montréal and houses the storied halls Salle Wilfrid-Pelletier and Maison symphonique.
- Venues including MTELUS, L’Olympia, Le National, Foufounes Électriques, Le Studio TD, and Club Soda feature some of the leading lights of rock, metal and indie.
