Montréal is recognized as a world leader and pioneer when it comes to sustainable solutions, which also extends to architecture. Built as an example of what green architecture should be, the Centre for Sustainable Development boasts the LEED® Canada NC Platinum certification, making it the first building in Québec to obtain this level, the highest in the LEED certification system.
Located in the downtown core, its innovative urban design —which meets the strictest environmental standards without neglecting aesthetic and the occupants’ and community’s well-being —, features a green roof, raised floors, geothermal wells, waterless and low-flow plumbing plus a living wall.
A non-profit organization, the Centre offers a free self-guided interpretation tour of the building and guided tours in small groups (in French only) on Fridays. A program of activities covering all spheres of sustainable development includes debates, lectures, documentary screenings, and exhibitions. Guided tours for groups of 5 to 20 persons and specialized tours are also offered upon reservations.
