Ismene

Festivals and events

“Ismene” re-centres the ancient myth by giving voice to Antigone’s sister, long confined to the margins of the story. In this compelling reinterpretation by Québec writer Carole Fréchette, translated by Linda Gaboriau, Ismene steps forward to recount the moment that has defined her for centuries. Alone on stage, she begins with clarity and restraint, but certainty gradually erodes into doubt, confession, and self-examination. Revisiting her bond with Antigone, one choosing uncompromising defiance, the other preservation of life, the play transposes Sophocles’ questions of justice into a contemporary context. The solo offers a thoughtful meditation on balance, courage, and choosing harmony in an imperfect world.
