Sir George-Etienne Cartier National Historic Site
Culture, arts and heritage Old Montréal
Step inside the elegant home of Sir George-Étienne Cartier, an influential politician and one of the Fathers of Confederation, and travel back to a period of sweeping change that helped shape Canada. Carefully restored, the residence features the only Victorian interior open to the public in Montréal. Its period décor, furnishings and authentic atmosphere reveal the refinement and daily life of Montréal’s 19th-century upper middle class. Explore the home’s private spaces and picture its residents going about their routines, welcoming guests or debating the major issues of their day. In December, Victorian Christmas decorations and activities make the visit especially worthwhile.
