Sioux Funky by Riel Benn
Festivals and events Old Montréal
The exhibition “Sioux Funky” explores Riel Benn’s Sioux heritage through the visual language of Cubism, a defining modern art movement of the early 20th century. By deconstructing forms and perspectives, Benn brings elements of his culture and mythology to the forefront. His contemporary approach remains rooted in ancestral traditions while transforming codes shaped by colonial culture. Echoing curator Eruoma Awashish’s perspective, the exhibition challenges long-established colonial viewpoints and invites reflection on decolonization through bold, unexpected works.
