“QAMUTIK” by Thomas Whiteley

“QAMUTIK” is the first solo exhibition by Kuujjuaq artist Thomas Whiteley. Through printmaking and woodworking, the exhibition honours the Inuit dog sled and the ingenuity behind the qamutik itself. More than transportation, the qamutik symbolizes freedom, self-sufficiency, and the enduring partnership between people and dogs. Reflecting on the lasting impact of the large-scale sled dog killings in Nunavik during the 1950s and 1960s, the exhibition highlights the resilience of Inuit culture and the revival of dog sledding as a living tradition rooted in knowledge, adaptation, and cultural continuity.
