Misinkotcikatek – Engraved by Jacques Newashis

Festivals and events Old Montréal

“Misinkotcikatek – Engraved” by Jacques Newashish presents a body of work where wood panels, carving and textiles intersect to explore the meeting of opposites. Drawing on Atikamekw motifs inspired by the biodiversity of Nitaskinan, the artist revisits patterns found in archives and ancestral practices. Through techniques such as stencilling and birch bark engraving, the works recall forms once seen on moose hide and baskets, while asserting a personal language. The exhibition offers a contemporary lens on living knowledge and evolving craftsmanship.
