November 25th used to be a day when no one worked and everyone celebrated with banquets, dancing, and good times. This was the feast of St. Catherine! In this spirit of celebration, Maison Saint-Gabriel invites visitors to two festive days featuring music, stories, workshops and a sweet tradition. It is one of the few places where traditional St. Catherine taffy is still being made. The sisters of the Congrégation de Notre-Dame have been making this molasses-based candy since Marguerite Bourgeoys’s time. On Novembrer 18th, workshops to learn how to make it with family or friends are offered. The next week, on November 25th, the sweet ingredients are mixed on the premises and then beaten and pulled for the enjoyment of visitors.
