In the summer of 1701, on the current site of Pointe-à-Callière, Montréal’s archeology and history complex, 38 Indigenous nations, along with the French and Canadians, came together to make peace and to put an end to nearly a century of conflicts in New France. This historic meeting gave rise to an unprecedented moment of discussion, alliance, and negotiation. Together, they signed the Great Peace of Montréal, a major diplomatic gesture that remains immensely significant today.
