Ice skates are an integral part of every young Montrealer's sports equipment, which is why the City of Montréal maintains more than 150 skating rinks in the region every winter. Junior hockey players meet up on neighbourhood rinks for friendly, impromptu games and large skating rinks, such as those in La Fontaine Park, Maisonneuve Park, the Quays of the Old Port and Mount Royal Park-the latter two refrigerated to extend skating pleasure (from December to March)-are popular meeting spots. On sunny afternoons and picturesque wintry evenings, amateur skaters and accomplished athletes can rent their skating equipment on most sites and enjoy Montréal's beautiful winter days.
