The Saint Francis Xavier Mission was founded in 1667 when the Kanienkeha’ka (Mohawk) community moved to the northern part of the Territory at Kentake (now Laprairie, Québec). The community displaced four more times due to economic, agricultural, and political changes, and settled at its present site at Kahnawake (meaning “On the rapids”) in 1716, where a more permanent church was built in 1720.
