Built between 1820 and 1824 with the aim of protecting the country from a possible invasion by the United States, the former British fortified depot on Île Sainte-Hélène is now equipped with a modern glass tower. The fort, located in the heart of a unique natural site in an urban environment, was the detention centre of 400 Italian merchant seamen and civilians as prisoners during the Second World War, from 1940 to 1943. Access to the inner courtyard is to be confirmed for 2022.
