Square Phillips is where architect Edward Maxwell erected the Birks building in 1894 to house businessman Henry Birks’s jewellery shop. The shop is still open today, but in 2018, the building also became a boutique hotel.
The transformation was made with great attention to restoring the building’s architectural characteristics, and preserving the perpetuity of the architect’s work. The offices on the 2nd, 3rd and 4th floors were converted into 132 modern and comfortable rooms and suites, while the hotel’s reception and restaurant were built next to the jewellery shop, on the ground floor.
Push open the ornate entrance doors to discover the beauty of this Montréal institution’s architectural detail and its carefully restored original ceiling mouldings and massive columns.
