Yannick Nézet-Séguin takes audiences into an expansive soundscape with one of the repertoire’s most powerful works: Holst’s “The Planets.” From the warlike percussion of “Mars” to the ethereal voices of “Neptune,” each planet reveals a distinct atmosphere. This masterpiece showcases the richness and variety of orchestral colour in a journey of contrasting emotions. The program also features Walton’s “Concerto,” highlighting the viola’s warm voice through the virtuosity of Antoine Tamestit. Opening the concert, Anishinaabekwe composer Barbara Assiginaak presents a new work inspired by the night sky, inviting audiences to listen to its enduring messages.
