Journey to the New World

Festivals and events

Journey to the New World traces the enduring power of Central European folk traditions and their influence on three major composers. Ligeti reimagines their colours and textures in “Concert Românesc,” a reflective tribute to the melodies of his childhood. Bartók shapes his “Violin Concerto no. 2” as a compelling dialogue between searing lyricism and asymmetrical rhythms drawn from rural sources, a work of striking vitality brought to life by Leila Josefowicz. Dvořák completes the journey with his “Symphony ‘From the New World,’” where memories of Bohemia meet the vast horizons of America. Under Alain Altinoglu’s direction, the program unfolds between deep roots and distant landscapes.
