It’s not so much a secret, but did you know that Montréal is as exciting underground as it is above ground? A lot goes on below the hustle and bustle of the downtown core in the «Underground City». This vast network of tunnels, corridors and atriums links people with transportation, accommodation, shopping, restaurants, art, entertainment, and even an arena!
Used by some 500,000 people each day, this 33-kilometre indoor pedestrian network is one of the most expansive in the world. Cool in the summer and warm in the winter, RESO (phonetic spelling of réseau which means network) lets you get quickly and ecologically about town, no matter the weather!
Connecting some 2,200 shops and restaurants, 10 major hotels, museums and theatres, the Underground City offers a wealth of public art, retail adventures and cultural possibilities. The network also connects over 60 office buildings, as well as schools and universities, with over 250 access points, accessible by metro, train, bus, car or by foot at street level.
In other words, RESO can get you pretty much anywhere you want to go downtown: Eaton Centre, Place Ville-Marie, Complexe Desjardins, Place des Arts, Convention Centre, Bell Centre and more.
The concept began in 1962, with a link between the Central Station and the lower level shopping mall in Place Ville Marie. With the coming of Expo 67, Montréal’s dream of a metro finally became reality. Since then, the underground network has expanded and connects the bus and train terminals and ten metro stations, stretching from the Atwater station in the west to Berri-UQAM in the east.
And finding your way around RESO is easy, thanks to the many wall maps that line its corridors, or displayed on the streets.
